Impulse Control

I was on Zoom for over 5 hours today and my brain is mush.

Even though it was all very interesting and I wanted to be part of the session, it was still hard to focus.

The little kid part of my brain just wanted to get up and run around…and maybe have some candy.

Luckily, I’m adult and I have some impulse control.

It was tricky though.

I was on time for everything today!

I had a lot of places to be at very specific times today and I actually planned things out so carefully that I got to all of my appointments in plenty of time.

That may not seem like a big deal to a lot of people but to someone with ADHD it’s HUGE.

If you’re neurotypical, you have no idea how many details are involved in the process of arriving somewhere on time. Figuring out how many things you can do in between appointments, when to stop what you are doing, when to leave, how long it will take you to get there, and then figuring out when and how to extricate yourself from one appointment in time to start the process of getting to the next one.

All of that stuff often ‘just happens’ for neurotypical people but for those of us with executive function issues, all of those things have to be conscious decisions.

And we have so many possibilities float up for each decision that the process is even more exhausting.

So, I’m calling today a complete victory!

Creativity Rituals?

I like a good ritual.

It doesn’t have to be complicated but a ritual has to have an internal order to it so I can sense that it is serving its purpose.

I really want more rituals to ease myself into creativity practices.

I have some tiny rituals that I can do to get myself started with my writing and it’s usually not hard to get myself to doodle. So I have some experience with this.

I would love to have a way to make mental space for a larger creative project.

Now I just need to figure out what that ritual would look like.

Robin in the snow

When one of my sisters was in primary school, she learned a cute song called ‘Robin in the Rain.’

I thought of it today when I saw this nice round robin on a snowy branch.

It’s not a a great pic because ai had to take it through a window with a screen but I’m still happy to have it.

A kind of blurry photo of a very round robin sitting on a bare branch in the show.

A little bit of fiction

I actually worked on some fiction today.

Just a 500 word story I wrote a while back. I did a little editing and revision and then submitted it to a critique group I was invited to.

It was fun to play with words in that way again.
